Get Together 2009 - IV - Activities & Gits
With two main things finalised for the event, it is time to turn our attention to other key areas....and of those that tops the list are:
1) Activities for Kids
2) Gifts for Kids
Last year, I had not organised any specific events for kids...and it was mostly some random performances from the kids. Most of them said next time we should have some specific activities for kids.
Taking it as a learning, I floated a mail to suggest on the activities but very poor response! Still we do not have any agenda there....
For now aji has given the idea of making anubhav do a dance performance....let's see what others come up with!
Gift for kids - I suppose Viji & Praveen are working on it....so I am not thinking too much here!
Get Together 2009 - III - Menu Update
Here goes the update as of last week.....
Finally we managed to get a near confirmation from the participants and also finalize on the menu.... and here are the details
Dec 31st - Tea Time
This time is not on part of the main event...but with the expectation that some of us would have already gathered.....this would be an ideal time for relishing some Hot bonda or molaga bajji from our famous poli stall with some hot tea.
[I initially had an idea of doing it as a sweet time with Kheer Kadam & Mishti doi types....but now am not so keen about it....]
Dec 31st - Dinner Menu
This is my special time...and here goes the menu.....
1) Thin Parathas - 3-4 Varieties (Expect some Chilli parathas too....)
2) 2 types of Subji (Gravy)
3) Veg. Pulao
4) Curd Rice
5) Thick Punjabi Sweet Lassi
[Since we south indians have to eat some rice...and also finish the meal with curd rice....we have included rice....]
Jan 1st - New Year Breakfast (Starts around 07h30)
New Year morning, we have decided to keep our menu simple, standard and light and that would be,
1) Idlies
2) Vada
3) Pongal
4) Sambhar
5) Chutney
6) Kassi Halwa (Sweet was choice of Praveen & my dad....I wasn't keen on sweet early in the morning).
Jan 1st - New Year Lunch (Starts around 12h30)
Lunch has also been planned in a typical south-indian way.....which includes:
1) Bisibela bath
2) White Rice
3) Rasam
4) Tamarind Rice
5) Potato Fry
6) Aviyal
7) Pappadam
8) Chips
9) Curd Rice
10) Paal payasam
11) Thayir Vadai (To be confirmed)
Since most of the people gathering are old and they don't relish trying out new cuisines...or rather prefer to keep it rice and related items....menus are mainly kept in south indian way.
I have found a new punjabi restaurant in T Nagar and tried their parathas & lassi and now thats what makes me go for the special menu on 31st evening.
As a prelude, yesterday I bought parathas, subji and lassi as dinner for everyone at home....and Praveen joined us too. So tasting session gave an "Ok" nod from others for 31st choice...and hence the menu!
So in a professional way, we are two steps ahead in the event management -
1) Listing participants
2) Finalising menu (including a tasting session!)

Get Together 2009 - II
Since the idea of Getting together by year end started rolling, I decided to do a few things....
1) I refreshed memories of last year to get some learnings and do things better this time....
2) First to try a kind of professional approach to the whole thing....something like say "Event Management" kind of stuff?! [Hahaha....let me see what happens...]
Towards a slightly professional approach, I opened an excel and listed out the participants ....which will be evolving as the days roll by and people confirm.
By today, we have close to 42 of us confirming the presence and we expect an average of 30 people to be around for all 3 times of the gathering.
Also initiated a discussion for menu.....with the hope that there might be some exciting items coming up!!! Hahaha....but the responses kind of turned the mail chain into a discussion on cooking and recipe.....
Get Together 2009
It is that time of the year, when we in Family Hub are ready for another Get Together - by end of year.
After the successful "Get Together" in 2008, we decided last year to redo this event year on year. Though people evinced interest and were fine with the idea of continuing, none was sure that this would happen.....for a year was too long to keep the momentum.
But hey, we are back again with the same event this year too.
"Get Together-2009" - is initiated and sponsored by Dhandu mama & Prema Attai. [So someone has actually kick started the talk again..... and set the ball rolling]. This year also venue will be in Chennai.
With that note, we (Praveen, Viji & myself...along with my parents) set on to talk about the next steps. Inviting the families for joining was done by Mama & Attai....and of course we also did a bit of canvassing too!!
Last year we had Siva & Family from US and timed it for the gathering. This year Ajitha & family timed it (not really a choice though!). So...past two year trend says....at least one family from US for every year gathering.....hmmm...whose turn is it next?

Continuing from 24.07.09 night.....
Night of 24.07.09 was a long one....after completing sleeping arrangements there was still some last minute stuffs left over. Anusha & Advi landed around 10h00 plus and after dinner headed with Arun & Rajini to sleep over.
Praveen & Ravi managed to offload all the Thamboolam stuff at the Marriage hall previous night itself to avoid additional work later. Some of us moved to Baktavachalam street to sleep in Cheenu's flat for the night. [I even sweeped the rooms to get it clean before sleeping. Siva....getting heart attacks!??!]
All of us managed to cramp ourselves in a single room where there was A/C.
Viji & Veena left to marriage hall after 11h00 or so to complete the Kolam and Praveen had to accompany them (He couldn't say no to his wife's words...;-))
For kolam, we sure did miss the usual owner of this task - Latha. ;-)
After a disturbing & tiring night....my alarm buzzes at 03h30. Soon Mala maami (viji's mom) and I set off back home to tie Madisar for my mom. Soon the first set of people with my parents left for mandapam. Viji & gang headed to Mandapam after getting ready.
By the time, people from Coimbatore landed with Tanvi pappa. By 06h00 most of us were in Mandapam. You can see some fresh snaps taken early in the morning.....before we lost any colour :-)
This day was also special in another way....that it was Prabha's birthday too!
Soon the crowd started pulling in. Some of us had to run up and down.....including me....but didn't manage to lose any weight :-( With puja continuing, it was time for breakfast and we decided to charge ourselves up to gain energy for rest of the show! ;-)

During the ceremony, we tried to do some live video streaming...but wasn't a success! Prasad helped us with USB Modem for internet connection and his laptop....and Sanjay tried to get it work.
Kids were having their own share of fun. Anusha was the best.....she had informed her in-laws and Aparna that she would be present in mandapam at 05h30....lol.....she came in only after 08h00 ....after they both had arrived. Lol.
Arun, Rajani & Ani....joined us...but sadly Rajani had to leave in-between to office and join us later for lunch.
During lunch, most of our cousins ate together.....and our menu included:

As thamboolam, we had given - Thengai, Vethalai paaku, Framed photo of God Dhanvantiri, Sai Baba book (or) Sundara Kaandam.
Around 12h00 to 13h00, it was time for us to pack up and return home. But our work did not end there. Most interesting session was after returning home...guess what it could be....
What else than unwrapping gifts and counting Moi stuff....lol. When it comes to such things...you know who can be trusted with and is best at it....none other than Sridhar!!
Sridhar attended the function both days and definitely did a lot of helping.....let's just say he was just at his usual best! :-) Shyamala & Anand joined us too...inspite of Anand's fever.
All of us were sloshed and some of us managed a light sleep for an hour or so. Praveen's fly & Veena's fly...didn't get much of sleep...and were waiting to hit the sack early at night.
As the rest of the day unfolded, some started to leave back to their nests.....was a very tiring day in all.
The whole event was a success.....and great kudos goes to Viji & Praveen. They both slogged the most from first and Veena joined them in the last days. Ravi joined and gave his slogging during the complete occassion. Of course there are others who owns certain tasks - Preeti Attai constantly doing some coffees, teas & tiffins for the whole family (oops...how much she was stuck to kitchen...) Perima, did her share of cooking stuffs.....and of course rest of us did have something or the other to contribute in our own way.
Sridhar's helping hand was definitely a relief to Viji & Veena....
Prakash & Ashwath could have also joined us...would have been very nice. Ok....that's the whole story for now....rest you can view it in the videos. When pictures arrive, I shall upload them.
Thanks to one and all....for making this a great occasion.

சஷ்டியப்தபூர்த்தி - ஸ்ரீனிவாசன் & கீதா ஸ்ரீனிவாசன்.....Continues
This is the day of doing RudraEkadasi at home. Started off in a low tone....around 07h00....and gathered momentum as time passed by. It was a day of Sastrigals (nearly 12+ of them) who commanded the entire family to move up and down. :-)
Since space was needed, we had raised a Shamiana on the terrace (that kept cool relatively inspite of scorching heat). Puja started post 07h00 and went on till 13h00.
Cooking & eating was as usual split into two homes - one madi samayal for Sastrigals & other for the rest of us. One Madisar maami cooked madi samayal while the rest of the family was planned to enjoy the meal from the Caterers.
Around 07h30-08h00, our stomachs started singing hungry song....and we waited for the Breakfast. Sure it did arrive for us to binge on!

Idly (Guess attai made this at home)
Not a great platter but enough to keep us shut for the time being. Of course, Preethi Attai took to her usual routine of making rounds and rounds of Coffees & Teas. :-) And so Attai's house was as usual crowded ;-)
While the Puja was happening, some smart ladies like Viji, Veena & Prabha decided to do some other work and finish some tasks....so they set on a task of getting ready the "Thaamboolam" (thengai bag) to be given for tomorrow. And kids Sanjay & Sandeep lent a helping hand in arranging.
I tried to occupy myself with some printing stuffs to be pasted on the Dhanvantiri gift...hehe...you know what I am good at ;-)
In the midst of puja, we were called to the terrace many a times....for performing namaskaram stuffs. Oh..one such time...we had to make 13 namaskarams at a time.....all of us had a good exercise of walking up and down two floor and additionally such rituals too :-) Guess I would have lost 2 kgs today......(hehe.....hang on...did i tell you that I later gained it 3 fold.....how?!?!...keep reading)
Around 11h00, our lunch arrived but we were told not to eat before the Sastrigals finished their puja and lunch. Gosh...that would be like 14h00 before we could taste anything. Finally, we got around the way to eat lunch at Preeti Attais house.....and used Murthy thatha as a reason to open the lunch boxes....[Our Hidden agenda was to taste the "Akkaaravadisal sweet"....that was focus of Veena & myself].
Meanwhile, we ladies were successful in sending Praveen & Ravi to some work outside....lol....and bother them to get things done!!! Kudos!
Akkaaravadisal is a variant of Sakkaraipongal....ghee filled.....yuuuuuuummmmmyyy it was......
Around 12h30, Puja got over and we started the சாப்பாடு பந்தி.
Veena, Viji, Sridhar & Self took turn for serving the first round. Second round we occupied the seats to eat....as we had to go out for an important job outside around 13h30. Arun managed to get some time to come home for lunch.
So let's now get down to the list of people who attended today:

Finishing lunch it was time for us to move on to the important job.....Veena, Viji & myself pressed escape button and went out for the next 3 hours....haha....but should say that Dandu mama called up umteen number of times....in all our phones to figure out when we will return.....aaaaahhhh gggrrrrrrrr....we did return only when our job was done.
Post lunch, some left while others took rest. Now Viji has moved on to Nanganallur for Abi's dance rehearsal. I am still managing to get Ravi & Praveen working on organizing some stuffs for tomorrow....lol....while I am busy writing you this blog and uploading pics.
Next is to get something working towards Live Streaming for tomorrow, arranging beds for tonite....now dad has gone to pick up Aditya's parents from airport.....and of course we have to finish the left-overs as dinner....(that includes both akkaaravadisal & sakkarai pongal...hehe)
The Shamiana guy is here to remove the same.....Thatha is busy with his friend (who will stay at our house tonight with his wife)....Ladies are on to their usual gossip session.....Of course my mom is somewhat jittery....waiting her sambandhi's arrival....lol.....;-)

With only one more day to go...lot of things happening at home.
Ravi arrived from Bangalore today in the afternoon. Perima & Perippa had come two days before.
Today Veena & Viji did some more shopping....of course some saree stuff and returned to Nanganallur for the evening.
Menu was confirmed today to the Chef.....keep guessing the sweets.....hehe....will update you on this tomorrow!
Evening was turn of Ravi & Praveen to do some last minute invites and ad-hoc shopping.
Sastrigal brought the items needed for tomorrow and left it in a corner.
Best part of today's agenda was to run behind options towards "Live Streaming" of the event. There was a spree of calls to find out all possibilities....only that it ended with no option.
Around 21h00, Vellore family arrived with loads of coconut...hehe!
Right now, samayal mami is making things ready for cooking tomorrow.....rest of us are just hanging around....
....some of us busy watching serials
and setting up the beds.
In the midst of all these....Praveen & Ravi did manage to find time to pose for a quick snap...after a hard day's work....:-)
Morning at 07h00 starts Rudrajapam.....so see you with more tomorrow.

Right now, samayal mami is making things ready for cooking tomorrow.....rest of us are just hanging around....
....some of us busy watching serials
and setting up the beds.
In the midst of all these....Praveen & Ravi did manage to find time to pose for a quick snap...after a hard day's work....:-)

சஷ்டியப்தபூர்த்தி - ஸ்ரீனிவாசன் & கீதா ஸ்ரீனிவாசன்
Returned back from my trip last nite and here I am trying to do some blogging on the forthcoming next big event in the family - yes - Mrs. & Mr. Srinivasan's Shastiabdapoorthi (My Parents).
Lot of things have been happening in the past month with Viji & Praveen taking care of preparing things. First it started with fixing the marriage hall, then moved on slowly to fixing Sastrigal, on to chef, menus etc.
To be honest, there was very little I did here and most of it was taken care by Praveen & Viji, followed by inputs from Dhandapani Mama and others. Of course, regarding all traditional aspects (vaitheega kaariyangal) inputs were from our aasthana Sastrigal (who lives in the opposite house).
Dhandu mama obviously took care of printing the invitations and sending it to various addresses.
Praveen & Viji joined to invite people personally in the neighbourhood.
With things advancing day by day, Veena joins the gang to give her helping hand after her son's poonal. And here I am today, just managing enough time to chat and get updated and of course the last few minutes of the day to blog here.
Hope to do some short updates from tomorrow on....to keep the momentum...what say....wouldn't it be a nice idea? - 3 more days to go.....clock ticks!
